25 x 2 Garden Designs in Lovely Detail – printed one side of the page

The designs are whimsical with gates, fountains, birdhouses, animals, fairy houses, and even a young girl on a swing. There are all sorts of elements which bring me right into the garden setting while I am coloring in the book. Having a wide variety of green pens/markers/pencils will make coloring in this book even more fun.

The designs are detailed and a few have intricate and rather small areas to color. The projects will be fun and take some time to finish so there is a great value here. There are 25 designs but the publisher has included two of each design for a total of 50 coloring pages. I have to decide whether I will color the designs two ways or share the book with my husband and see how differently we color the same designs.

While you can have access to .PDFs when you purchase this book, my review is based on the book as it is received from Amazon. That way you will know what the pages look like and how they accept color. I like that the publisher provides the digital version as well so you can choose the paper you wish to use and/or to color the pictures as many times as you choose.

This is what I found while coloring in this book and testing the paper with my coloring medium:

25 x 2 Detailed Garden inspired designs

Designs are printed on one side of the page

Paper is typical of CreateSpace: white, thin, slightly rough and non-perforated. The back of the page is printed black which is something I am find typical of Jade Summer coloring books.

The designs do not merge into the binding. There is a heavy framing line at the outer edges of the design to give the project a more finished look, especially for framing.

Glue Binding (there is room to cut the pages out if you choose to do so.)

Though you cannot see the bleed-through easily due to the back of the page being printed in black, I recommend the use of a blotter page when working in this book. I use a page of card stock or several sheets of heavyweight paper under my working page. It keeps seeping ink and marring dents from ruining the pages below.

Alcohol-based markers bleed through the page quickly.

Water-based markers bleed through in spots.

Gel pens and India ink pens leave shadows on back of the page. India ink can bleed through if you apply heavily or multiple coats.

Coloring Pencils work well with this paper. I found that I could layers the same color for deeper pigment or multiple colors and I could blend easily using a blending stick. I tested both oil and wax based pencils. I also found that hard lead pencils leave dents through the paper.

Beautiful Scenes to Step Into With Color

Being someone who loves the outdoors and gardens in general I find this book to be like stepping into a splendid place to get lost in coloring The drawings have plenty of small detail to give me a challenge and I plan to complete and frame some of them for gifts. With so many lovely gardens to choose from in this book, I will be busy for a very long time.
P.S. If you are printing the digital version I found a wonderful paper that works great with my HP Inkjet and jel pens Neenah Exact Index Card Stock, 8.5 x 11 Inch, 90 lb, White, 250 Sheets (40311) Happy coloring!

Lovely drawings. I love them all. The 25 scenes repeat later but I love coloring gardens and trees a lot, it makes me feel as though I am in a calm, verdant and serene place!

If This Book Cost $20,000, It Would Still Be Worth The Money.

When I visited Richard Koch at this home in Portugal, I told him he should take this book off the market, buy up all the used copies and re-package it for $20,000. Why? Because it explains the essence of the strategy that grew his wealth from $2 million to $200 million in less than 20 years.

Essentially, this book says “Why do I bat 50% when most Venture Capitalists bat 5%? The secret is the Star Principle.” Only bet on #1 players, and only play in markets that are growing at 10% per year or more. Disqualify everything else. And if you’re not the #1 player, redefine the market so you ARE the #1 player.

Now of course Richard goes into much greater detail than that, but that’s the gist of it. I realized when I read it, that all the major home runs I've hit in my career did in fact follow that formula. I’d just never articulated it as well or as clearly as Richard had.

As a marketer, this has added a tremendous context and focus to my approach to Unique Selling Proposition, or USP. I think we do a very good job with USP but this added another level of specificity. What space should you choose to be unique in? Is that space growing? How is it defined? What language has the market chosen to describe it and how should you alter that language? How can you adjust your USP by 10% to fit Richard’s formula, so you have a First Mover Advantage wherever you go?

This is to say, you don’t have to necessarily be an equity investor or even “have money” to benefit from this. This book is about ANY business situation where you decide where to drive your stake in the ground. It’s just as applicable to a bootstrap entrepreneur as it is to an investor with a few million dollars in his pocket.

You might read this book and conclude you're in the wrong industry, niche or profession. Better to figure that out now, not later.

I was kicking myself for not having read this book five years ago - a friend of mine had sent it to me quite some time ago. But now that I have it under my belt, it has transformed my understanding of where to focus my finite energy. Some of us marketers are so good we can move ourselves or a client from #5 to #1. Yes, it can be done. But the odds are against you. There are easier ways.

What happens if you take the same amount of energy and you focus it on transforming a “#1 by small margin” to “#1 by HUGE margin”? That’s where fortunes are made.

I love the elegance and simplicity. I also appreciate the fact that Richard is willing to even write books like this in the first place. Most players at his level are not in the book writing business and it might arguably be in their interest to keep that wisdom to themselves. Thanks Richard for a truly and genuinely game-changing book.

detailed, compelling info for startups & investors

If you've read 'the 80/20 principal' you'll know how easy to read Koch's style is. And how useful the content.

I was skeptical about buying this as I don't (yet) have $1m to invest in buying businesses, which is what I though this book was mainly about.

In fact it's a VERY practical guide to help you examine the strategy of your current small (very small) business & re-work it to give you a much much greater chance of creating a 'star' business

A star has 2 attributes:
- it's leader in it's niche
- the nichee is growing fast

But for the 99% of us who don't already own that business, Koch gives an excellent & detailed guide how to go about repositioning an existing business to meet these criteria

If you're writing a strategic plan - you need to read this
If you're running a small business with lots of competitors - read this
& if you've got the cash to invest in a small business, this is an excellent guide to help with the big picture due dilligence (not the detailed stuff)

and the icing on the cake is the detailed descriptions that Koch gives about his own experiences (good & bad), investments, disasters.
He walks his talk. Anyone worth $100m isn't writing a book to make money on the sale - it's because they want to help. And that's a good enough reason for me to read it!

A True Wealth Creation "Secret" Revealed

Generally, I am skeptical of buying and reading wealth creation books. In fact, if I wasn't a fan of Koch's work because of his other books, I don't think I would have picked up this one. But I am SO glad I did!

In The Star Principle Richard blows the lid on what can only be called a phenomenon - that of a Star business. What is a Star business? An example will illustrate:

A woman called Sara Blakely owns a Star business called Spankx (this is my own example and not from the book.) Quoted from Entrepreneur Magazine: "Blakely founded Spanx in 2000 to solve a simple problem: She wanted the body-slimming effect of a pair of control-top pantyhose but without the feet. Her clever invention quickly became a global phenomenon. Today the Spanx brand houses over 200 products sold in more than 50 countries, according to the company, and she remains the sole owner."

How clever was her invention? She is a billionaire (yes, with a "b") http://www.forbes.com/profile/sara-blakely/

A star business is a) in a fast growing niche (and the Star often invents the niche) and b) is the market leader in the niche. A star business grows at amazing speed, and creates untold wealth for it's owners and share-holders. Apple Computers, Google, Coca Cola, and more recently Facebook, Groupon, Spankx, and virtually all big, well known companies you can think of, are, or were once, Stars.

The reason I say Richard "blew the lid" on a wealth creation secret is because I have never seen this approach before. But the more time I spend on it, and look at Star businesses, the more this approach makes total sense.

While I have just read the book and haven't yet had the opportunity to implement the ideas to my own life, I have 100% confidence that it will help me significantly improve my wealth, and I will have a boat load of fun in the process. Richard also helps one understand how to benefit from this idea as an entrepreneur who wants to start a business, an investor or venture capitalist who wants to back a winning horse, or even as an employee who is looking for an exciting workplace where earning equity shares in a company that will be very valuable one day is a real possibility. So the book caters for anyone really.

How relevant is all this to you? I guess that depends if you want to get rich or not.

No fru fru here

I got this as a gift from my son for my bday, per my request. I have 2 other books by J.Pepin. Lots of illustrations of finished recipes in here, and enough white space on the page to read the recipe and steps w/o needing strong glasses.

My first recipe I made was the easiest thing I could find to jump in, the Coffee Panna Cotta. I made it for company recently bc it turned out great during my test batch. I have seen recipes for panna cotta in every flavor and combination of dairy imaginable. This was so simple, with few ingredients, I love it. Serve it with a drizzle of chocolate syrup on top, or a few curls of shaved chocolate or a shot of whipped cream.

When I get a cookbook with lots of personal narratives inside, I tend to skim over it... but this one was different. His anecdotes were interesting w/o being overbearing. I learned a lot of tidbits of his life story and understand why his tastes in food have developed beyond French cuisine. This book is a compilation of that life journey, presented as it were, on a plate. It is not just about French food. So if that's what you want, look elsewhere. The recipes are many, and with much variety; so you will find an array of the most recognizable ingredients to a few 'strange' ones as defined by the American commonplace diet. There are many simple seafood, shellfish, recipes that are 10 mins to whip up and the usual suspects, chicken, beef, pork, vegetables, etc...it is common that in the majority of cookbooks out there, you will find some recipes you'll never do while jumping into others. Some simple dessert recipes too...I want to try the brittle using seeds bc my g'daughter is allergic to nuts. Although he says you can use a pot on the stove to make this, he gives instructions to use the microwave to do it, which shows you, he doesn't mind using something that is usually relegated to just heating up tea or water.
He has nice simple gratin recipes using various veggies--tomatoes, endive, etc..
Jacques is not stuffy or fru fru. He is so down to earth in his outlook on food as in life, and his comments bear that out... I always remember how he once said on TV that it's not a question as to washing mushrooms, adding, simply, that if they are dirty, you MUST wash them... it's just a matter of when. Just do it right before you cook with them. So many cooks and chefs say NEVER to run them under water, like it's a cardinal sin to do that, subscribing instead to a damp cloth or soft-bristled brush at most. I wash them under a faucet and dry them off and cook away. If it's ok for Jacques, it's ok by me! My kind of guy. This is just an example of what I mean. He does not stand on ceremony, he uses common sense and is comfortable in his approach to food, cooking, and methods.... His cooking is as easy and relaxed and approachable as he is. In fact, the message he makes clear in this book is that food should taste like what it is, not to disguise it or gussy it up so much that you lose what the food is. He says, with both food and wine, he just wants to enjoy what he eats and drinks--not to over analyze it. I love that. In short, as on his TV series and these books, that is what you get...a straightforward and refreshingly simple approach to food. No tricks nor gimmicks, no fancy foamy garnishes on food here.

I have many pages in his new book tagged. And as Jacques would say, it's not a matter of will I cook some more recipes--it's just a matter of WHEN I will. And I will. I'll report back later when I do.

Dec 22: I made the "chocolate pistachio brittle" and it turned out fabulous. It is all made in one bowl in a microwave! I made half a recipe using walnuts (I had no pistachios) and chocolate chips and it was so good, easy and fast and ready to eat in about an hour! I then made a full recipe using chocolate chips and sunflower seeds. It too was great. My 9 yr old g'daughter has never had peanut brittle bc of her serious allergy to peanuts, now she can have a faux peanut brittle made to order for her and using all safe ingredients. The taste was delish. I am dealing with many huge dental issues and I too was taking a huge risk making brittle! I was glad I did, bc the brittle is not SO brittle and hard as to break your teeth, it has just the perfect crunch and taste. Plan on putting this out along with pie and cookies at the Christmas table.
Feb 2016: Made his simple red cabbage slaw, uses vinaigrette, not a mayo base, simple to make, great for summer when you don't want to risk mayo going sour. He added blue cheese at end, I used goat cheese which I prefer.

This is an exceptional cookbook. No one writes better recipes than Pepin. Clear, concise, often sharing invaluable tips for the recipe at hand, as well as countless other dishes. Pepin's latest is beautifully illustrated as always, and the recipes are all surefire winners. I just came back from a long weekend away, during which we cooked several of these recipes, and flipped through the book noting dishes to tackle in the coming months. If you know anyone who loves to cook, this book is the perfect gift.

I highly recommend this fascinating discussion of Oedipus Tyrannus - a book that can be read over and over with continuing interest. Every time I experience one of Segal's chapters, I come away with new thoughts. The historical/cultural setting is well described, and the intricacies of this extremely complex masterwork are discussed with enlightening insight. If you love the Oedipus Tyrannus, get this book!

About the Author
Joan T. Erber received her Ph.D. in Psychology from Saint Louis University, after which she completed a Post-Doctoral Fellowship in Aging and Development at Washington University in St. Louis. She is presently Professor of Psychology at Florida International University, and has extensive experience teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in adult development and aging and conducting research on processes of aging. Her numerous publications focus on aging and memory and how stereotypes of aging influence our perceptions and evaluations of older adults. Her research findings, some of which were funded by grants from the National Institute on Aging, are published in scientific journals such as Psychology and Aging, Journal of Gerontology: Psychological Sciences, and Experimental Aging Research. She has served on editorial boards of journals that publish research on aging. Additionally, Erber is a Fellow of the Gerontological Society of America (GSA), the Association for Psychological Science (APS), and the American Psychological Association (APA). She is a past president of the APA Division 20 (Adult Development and Aging).

Great text book!

I got this textbook for my psychology of aging class and I loved it. It covers all the different physiological and psychological aspects that tend to either decline or stay the same with age following a dual theory point of view. What I liked about this text book is that it is laid out in a very clear way, and the text itself is very easy to understand. Following each chapter there is a summary of the main points covered in the chapter and some questions for thought, both of which are very helpful when trying to memorize concepts. All in all I really like this text, especially when I compare it with another textbook that I used for my kinesiology class. Some of the same concepts were presented in both books, but my kinesiology textbook was so wordy, that I tended to loose myself while reading it. This one is straight to the point with just enough information to help the student and not confuse him/her further.

Excellent book on aging and older adulthood. Very informative and comprehensive. Also very well written. If you are interested in this topic and are a beginner in this field, this is the right book for you.

Not bad

Not a bad book for a required read. I had to purchase this book for a senior level (University) Psychology book. The book was well written and easy to understand however a lot of the concepts mentioned were what I would consider to be common knowledge for anyone who has taken prior Psychology courses.

This is the first volume of the series: "How I Began to Dislike Gandhi". Mahatma Gandhi (Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi) is one of the most influential political figures of the twentieth century. Like many others in the West, Gandhi's ideas have captivated a young, bright, politically active girl from a western German city during the mid-1980s. More than anyone else Gandhi influenced her on her ideas on democracy, peace, non-violence, decentralization, equality, environmentalism, and justice. For two decades she followed Gandhi wholeheartedly. But when she began to read Gandhi's own writings, to her shock, she realized that her idol was not necessarily the same as she thought him to be. This book is a personal account of what she has found out-Gandhi to be a conservative, authoritarian, patriarchal, Victorian reactionary. In seven short chapters, this book polemically puts Gandhi in a new light, mostly by quoting from his own colossal writings that altogether comprise of around 49,000 pages. While this is not a biography of Gandhi in a conventional sense, this could be a thematic biography written in an autobiographical style. “How I Began to Dislike Gandhi” differs from other books on Gandhi on a few grounds. First of all, there are less interpretations in this book. Readers can reach to their own conclusions by reading what Gandhi said or wrote. At best this book is a systematic or thematic ordering of Gandhi's writings on those subjects that were crucial for the author when she embraced and later distanced from Gandhi. Secondly, this is different from most writings on Gandhi-they either want the reader to be a sympathizer or a hater of Gandhi. Here, despite the provocative title and overall theme of the book, it presupposes a balanced reader, not a fanatic follower or a rabid hater. The author wishes and hopes that the conclusion she reaches after reading Gandhi's writings would make sense to many fellow travelers. Thirdly, this book is written lucidly. It does not demand a significant understanding of Gandhi or India. It does not enter to any philosophical or ethical arguments. If at all there are some observations most of it is commonsensical. “This is only a reading of Gandhi, of some issues he dealt with, which were pertinent in my life for many years. This is a personal account of disillusionment and my survival of it. Of certain fundamental issues that form the basis of my everyday life-like what I eat, how I interact with others, how I share my body, and what I consume. This is a political autobiography of a commoner.” Sabine von Herbert is a pseudonym of an internationally published academic based at a German university. Interview with the author What made you write this book? After living a number of years thinking that I adhered to Gandhi's principles, all on a sudden I realized that I knew only a little about Gandhi. I was imitating Gandhi the film character. So when I read what he wrote I wanted to tell it to the world. I know a number of people who follow Gandhi would be shocked to read his opinions on race, caste or gender. What is the purpose? My purpose is very modest. I wish somebody had written this book before me so that I would have known about Gandhi more accurately. If I knew what is described in the book 10 or 15 years before, I would have led a different life. So, my purpose is to help others like me to make an informed decision before they decide to lead a life in a close connection with Gandhi. I think that sense-making is important before following any political ideas, or gurus. Are you angry with Gandhi? No, I am not. I am a bit angry with myself for not making necessary assessments before following a cult. I am not feeling bitter. But I am a bit disillusioned. Will you recommend anyone to follow Gandhi? If anyone wants to follow Gandhi, I'd recommend this book among their preliminary reading!
