Review
"The second edition of this textbook builds on the solid foundation of its predecessor and incorporates new research and developments in a user-friendly way. It is easy to tell that the author is passionate about teaching adult development and aging courses.  In particular, I liked how Erber did not sacrifice historically important theories and studies in her book. Thus, I highly recommend this textbook as it represents an excellent introduction to a topic with increasing societal and global importance."
–Manfred Diehl, Colorado State University

"This text has a number of features that will appeal to both instructors and students.  For example, the author weaves a genuine attention to issues of diversity through each and every chapter. The author also includes realistic examples that demonstrate the significance of concepts to readers' own work with older adults, their own families, and even themselves, no matter their age. Most importantly, this text integrates three approaches that are essential to understanding aging: a biopsychosocial focus that spans key domains relevant to aging, a lifespan developmental perspective that views aging as a process rather than an event, and an empirical approach that recognizes the importance of theory and research in understanding and improving the experience of late life.
In sum, this text is a vibrantly written, comprehensive, and current introduction to aging and older adulthood, ideal for students from many disciplines who need to be prepared for their own aging and the aging of others around them."
–Brian D. Carpenter, Washington University

“Erber's Aging and Older Adulthood is thoroughly revised and updated and incorporates the latest research findings along with a compassionate, humanistic perspective. The new material on research applications to everyday problems of older adults, such as driving, shopping, and medical decision-making, will be of interest to those planning careers in aging as well as those planning on growing old.”

From the Back Cover
The second edition of Aging and Older Adulthood reflects the most up-to-date scientific research and theoretical foundations that contribute to our understanding of the aging process and older adulthood. Erber organizes the book around complementary “big point-of-view” theories that focus on successful aging and adaptation, such as the “selective optimization with compensation model” as well as matching a person's competencies with demands of the environment (the “ecological model”). To ensure that students acquire a cohesive understanding of the theories, Erber closes each chapter with a discussion and application of these theoretical models. Integrated with examples of diversity and filled with real-world applications, this engaging text offers the most updated insights and theoretical underpinnings related to our understanding of the human aging process.

  • Updated content and references include recent neurological findings on brain structure and functioning as well as factors that influence cognitive functioning, health care, decision making, and social relationships.

Great text book!
By GeorgiaH
I got this textbook for my psychology of aging class and I loved it. It covers all the different physiological and psychological aspects that tend to either decline or stay the same with age following a dual theory point of view. What I liked about this text book is that it is laid out in a very clear way, and the text itself is very easy to understand. Following each chapter there is a summary of the main points covered in the chapter and some questions for thought, both of which are very helpful when trying to memorize concepts. All in all I really like this text, especially when I compare it with another textbook that I used for my kinesiology class. Some of the same concepts were presented in both books, but my kinesiology textbook was so wordy, that I tended to loose myself while reading it. This one is straight to the point with just enough information to help the student and not confuse him/her further.

Not bad
By Minty
Not a bad book for a required read. I had to purchase this book for a senior level (University) Psychology book. The book was well written and easy to understand however a lot of the concepts mentioned were what I would consider to be common knowledge for anyone who has taken prior Psychology courses.
