About the Author
Rob Shimonski is an expert pro-audio consultant living in NY. Rob is a songwriter, a multi-instrumentalist, an avid audio/video producer and engineer, a studio designer and a noted expert on the use of Pro Tools based systems. Rob has been in the industry for over 20 years and is an expert in DAW design and deployment. Rob is also a key lecturer for Five Town Audio College in NY (www.ftc.edu).
Chris Basile is a veteran producer, recording engineer and musician who specializes in studio design and deployment, Pro Tools LE and HD systems as well as both audio and video production. He has spent 20 years on both sides of the glass and just recently opened SubSonic Audio, a full service recording facility in NY.

Best Book out there for ProTools Beginners

Ive been playing in bands my whole life. I play guitar and I was using a Fostex D-8 for the past 4 or 5 years to record our practices and preproductions before I finally gave in to my drummers pleas to make the leap to ProTools. I was real comfortable with the Fostex and setting up a computer with an interface just seemed too complicated and I didnt want to spend months trying to figure out what to do. Im not one to read books, but being a complete "Newbie" to the World of ProTools , this book had me up and running in one session , and actually understanding what I was doing after reading through most of the book . It also stays in our jam room and is a great referance book when I get stuck with the more complicated tasks ( for me at least ) like beat detective and actually setting up my Macs resources. All in all, Im sold on ProTools and this book got the cobwebs out of my head and filled it with enough knowledge to get us some pretty cool soundin stuff.

Great for the beginner...

I searched a long time for my first book on Pro Tools 8 and finally purchased this one. I would consider this a decent book for the beginner. It walks you through everything in the most basic form while teaching you some key commands and other things. This is focused on Pro Tools 8 LE on a Mac. I think the book was a alright read. I don't feel I learned that much that hadn't already known from watching the included video and just messing around for hours. This book spends about a quarter of its time explaining hardware and general setup. Which I feel is a little redundant due to the fact that Pro Tools already comes with a setup guide. If you are buying this you have probably already purchased your hardware as well. I was hoping it was going to get into the details about music production. Possibly with tips and tricks...? While it did define what everything does it just skims the surface of what you can do with the tools available to you. I am going to order the Courseware book and hope that that one goes a quite bit more in depth.
Verdict: Great for a brand new user to Pro Tools who needs help from setup to their first use.

I bought all 3 Protools books from focal press and I tell you they `re really great! If you have time to study and practice what`s on the books, you`ll have a solid basis on pro tools, for sure! Great! Fantastic for beginners or even for those who wants to improve their skills!
