Review
"Wow! This describes not only Jennifer's story, but also the hope that exists for any young person growing up in Singapore - and for women who have had to journey through a pregnancy alone. An easy, engaging read, the book strikes a sensitive balance: she provides enough details for readers to feel the reality of the situation without overdoing it for sensationalism." --Joanna Koh-Hoe, President/CEO, Focus on the Family Singapore

Review by Vincent Zee
By Shawn Walrus
The innocence and joy of childhood were shattered by the tussles of loved ones
in a place called home. Growing up in a tumultuous, complex family, and a
society where success is measured by one's ability to meet an economic status;
is subtly portrayed within the lines. This book deals not only with Jennifer's pains but
in greater magnitude, life in a cosmopolitan, competitive, secular society faced by
many like her.

The importance of family as the fundamental nucleus, her God, identity, is noted
beneath the pains she went through. Her yearning for a close family nucleus
strongly mirrors many who cry in silence.

Like many Youths and Young adults; her search for self-identity, acceptance and
a better tomorrow sees her spiraling into a whirlpool of unceasing tribulations.
Few managed to escape and make it to relate their journeys, while others are too
taunted. Yet many are sucked into these slippery pits of no return.

The small flame in her was not snuffed despite the heinous journey; but fanned
stronger in silence. Planted during her innocent years; it burns and lighted her
dark world. With determinations, fortitude and hunger for a better life, this flame
transforms her into a beautiful elegant swan. John, a chivalrous, noble man came
into her life, to build on her strength and her worth. His acceptance of her as she
is; further strengthens her determinations to strive for her goal towards pursuing
her cause.

Jennifer's journey characterizes many like her in this modern day society. Caught
up by the economic and social rat race, the price is often very high for those who
could not succeed. While many infuriate and pass judgments on those who fell
short of the society's standards, she reveals the agonies and emotional pains
those directly affected would have to carry long after the event is over.

An easy to read book within one sitting, it speaks volumes of the significance
and fragility of Family, Identify, Love, Social responsibilities and meaning in life.
A must read book for social workers and counselors who wants to be better
equipped. It is also food for the soul for the general public, to be aware of the
problems around us despite our economic and social success. It shows how we
could love our neighbours better. At the same time to show grace and to ponder
before passing judgments.

One of this year's gems - a must read!
By CS
We live in a fallen world. Broken family and relationships are inevitable. They affect the way we think, perceive and react to the circumstances in our lives. And sometimes we may make the wrong choices. That is what happened to the author of this book, Jennifer Heng. In "Walking Out of Secret Shame", she shares from her heart all the pain that she went through. You will cry (and laugh a little bit) as she takes you to journey with her, right into her life. Pain after pain, choice after choice, decision after decision, day after day. Until she finally realises that she doesn't have to remain a victim of those circumstances and choices she made, and that there IS a way out. Don't be fooled by the size of this book! It may be pretty small, but as the review title suggests - just like the author herself - this book is indeed a gem...

An outstretched hand of understanding and hope...
By Tracey Yeo
The author takes us on a journey through her world where the compass of guidance and direction swings confusingly for a young girl after her parents' bankruptcy and divorce. The bottom falls out for her throughout the vulnerable teenage years as she attempts to sort things out on her own. And she falls, most painfully, many times.
This book is easy to read, honest and open in it's approach. It confronts the issue of teenage pregnancy, loss and where to go from there. This book is the author's outstretched hand of understanding, friendship and hope for any young lady who has trudged bravely alone and who might still be carrying a deeply heavy load from the loss and grief of an abortion, or facing a decision as to whether to have one. An afterword in the book offers upfront advice and a list of local helplines. A good read recommended also for all teenage girls as they begin their own journeys through important decisions in life.
