A Novel of Mythological Proportions

Reading this extraordinary book brought to mind a quote from Roethke: "What is madness but nobility of the soul at odds with circumstance." Four siblings and their father prepare for Hurricane Katrina and this novel takes place in twelve days as they await and prepare for the hurricane.
The story is told from 15 year old Esch Bastille's perspective shortly after she has finds out she is pregnant. Motherless herself since her youngest brother Junior was born, Esch is trying to hang on to the impoverished but emotionally rich life of her family in 'the pit', their home is Bois Sauvage, Mississippi. Her oldest brother Randall has the potential to be recruited for a college basketball scholarship but lately his knee has been swelling a lot whenever he works out. Skeetah, her other brother, loves his pit bull China with a fierce and total passion. China has just given birth to puppies and her maternal instinct is in question. She is a fighting dog and the scenes of dog fights are visceral but essential to the core of the novel.
What transfixed me was the mythological backdrop to the narrative. Esch, a good student, has a book on Greek mythology that she is reading for school over the summer. Her character is super-imposed on the Jason and Medea story and Esch notices that "in every one of the Greeks' mythology tales, there is this: a man chasing a woman, or a woman chasing a man. There is never a meeting in the middle. There is only a body in a ditch, and one person walking toward or away from it." As Esch deals with her feelings for Manny, the baby's father, she reflects on the Greek myth.
While this novel's narrative focuses on a poor black family trying to survive a brutal and unforgiving act of nature in the face of very adverse conditions, it is really timeless. It is about connection, love, family and loss. It is about those things that are bigger than what we perceive on the surface, the geological core of our being. As Esch says, "I will tie the glass and stone with string, hang the shards above my bed, so that they will flash in the dark and tell the story of Katrina, the mother that swept into the gulf and slaughtered. Her chariot was a storm so great and black the Greeks would say it was harnessed to dragons."
I will not forget this book. It has worked its way into my heart and being It is one of my all-time favorite books.

We never think it will happen to us.

To be honest, I have a hard time remembering anything about Hurricane Katrina except the big narrative surrounding it about FEMA. FEMA this and FEMA that. It’s easy to forget about the people affected by the storm. Especially when they’re part of the minority. Stories that aren’t told enough.
I also remember people saying that New Orleans deserved to be leveled. The sins of the city needed to be washed clean. I believe this is a perfect response by people that have only experienced a small slice of the story. The world is full of imperfect characters and things happen to everybody. Does anyone ever deserve it?
Enter Salvage the Bones.
Jesmyn Ward relates a story of a family living in the New Orleans area during the approach of Hurricane Katrina. Life goes on as normal because not everyone sits glued to the radio or television for each and every scrap of news. Sometimes it is a minor blip on our radar. Other times, you just do what you can and hope for the best.
The characters in Salvage the Bones are real. Ward places real faces to the otherwise anonymous lives that were transformed by the quiet powerhouse that was Katrina. The reality of the characters expands on the singular narrative that is Hurricane Katrina. They are stories that must be told so that a more complete picture can be developed from the event.
Thank you Jesmyn Ward for sharing your stories. I will continue to salvage the bones.

great novel, sad

Really great story but also quite depressing. This is the kind of book everyone should read but it would be difficult to re-read. Have a happier novel ready to go once you finish this. This is the story of Esch and her family, dirt poor, motherless and living in rural Mississippi right before Hurricane Katrina hits. I rarely cry but this made me tear up. It is disturbing knowing that people live like this in our own country. I really hated the dog fighting scenes, though. Wondering about the fate of China, her brother's beloved pit bull, and her puppies, was nail-biting. Just knowing that Katrina was going to hit added another dimension while I was reading this.
