Enlightening and Revealing

Critiques say there is no politics in Singapore. That is
not true. In the fifties and sixties, there was bloodshed
and ample fighting for power. Elements of politics like
intrigues and the espionage including the planting of a
'night-soil man', who turned out to be a spy who later studied
law in the United Kingdom, into the People's Action Party (PAP)
were ample during those times.
It was because of the boycott of the Barisan Socialis (BS) party
which made PAP have hegemony in political scene of Singapore.
This was admitted by BS as its mistake. Since around 1968,
PAP had little opposition from opposition parties until
today. This hegemony by PAP made it seem like there is no
politics in Singapore. At every election, the incumbent PAP
still has to fight hard to win votes. In the last General
Election, out of every three persons, one still oppose the PAP.
The book gave some details of what has not been told before
like the old guard having bitterness towards PAP for being
retired to make way for new blood. As former deputy prime
minister Toh Chin Chye said when retired, "How are we going
to find our livelihood?"
The book detailed three phases of PAP: fight for power,
consolidation of power, and transfer of power under the
leadership of Mr Lee Kuan Yew, Mr Goh Chok Tong, and incumbent
Mr Lee Hsien Loong.

A good book and worth time to read if you are interested in Singapore's past political history.

It is a good book and gave insight into the behind the scene events before and after the independence of Singapore. Author has interviewd both PAP memebers/supporters and its enemies and present those behind the scene events in entertaining manner. A good book and worth time to read if you are interested in Singapore's past political history.
