About the Author

Jason Goodwin is a developer who is primarily self-taught. His entrepreneurial spirit led him to study business at school, but he started programming when he was 15 and always had a high level of interest in technology. This interest led his career to take a few major changes away from the business side and back into software development. His journey has led him to working on high-scale distributed systems. He likes to create electronic music in his free time.

He was first introduced to an Akka project at a Scala/Akka shop―mDialog―that built video ad insertion software for major publishers. The company was acquired by Google eventually. He has also been an influential technologist in introducing Akka to a major Canadian telco to help them serve their customers with more resilient and responsive software. He has experience of teaching Akka and functional and concurrent programming concepts to small teams there. He is currently working via Adecco at Google.

Amazing book for learning akka from scratch.

An Amazing introduction to akka. Tried to read the akka documentation which was dry and lengthy, so brought this book to read it in kindle. The book is very enjoyable. The reader is expected to know scala or java.

Excellent Introduction to Akka

This book is great to get you started to Akka. Prior to this I was lost between multiple blogs and internet resources. This book is very nice and gave me a solid start. Now every other resource on the internet is making sense to me.

Great introduction to Akka to get going fast. Code in the Kindle version is unformatted and hard to read, though.

Great content. This will definitely get you started with Akka if you haven't already used it.

The book assumes a working knowledge of either Scala or Java 8. Code examples are always provided in both languages, so you only need to know one of the two. This book also assumes knowledge of basic Java concurrency features (synchronization, atomics, volatile, etc.). You don't need to be an expert with Java concurrency to read this book, but you should at least know what synchronization is in Java and how to do it, for example.

I read the Kindle version. A heads up, (and, this is the reason I docked a star), the code examples are not formatted for the Kindle (who needs line breaks?). Luckily, there is a GitHub repository where the example code resides which is much easier to read.

The book introduces you to Akka via a very hands-on approach, asking you to write the code for two applications you build upon as you progress through the material. Homework assignments are provided at the end of each chapter to test your comprehension. I prefer hands-on approaches and this is the reason I give the book a solid 4 stars. Don't expect this to be all-inclusive. This will get you productive in Akka fast, but you will not REALLY know what you are doing if this is all you read. However, that is exactly what I needed (I recently picked up a project that relies heavily on Akka) for me to get started with hacking on Akka based projects.

If you are a swift learner, you could get through this book in two 8 hour work days by skimming it if you know Scala pretty well (prior knowledge of Futures, Promises, Concurrency, Scala's type system features like case classes or Java 8 lambdas, etc. really helps, here). I got through half of the material in 6 hours. Most people will probably want to take a week to digest the material presented in this book and work through the examples, though.

I really liked being able to compare the Java vs the Scala code side-by-side throughout the book.

A Most Intriguing Story

This is the fascinating account of the so-called dancing plague of 1518 Strasbourg. Although this type of plague does not appear to be as well-known as other remarkable events that have occurred in history, its 1518 occurrence was not the first and not quite the last. The author does an excellent job of setting the scene for this event on the political, cultural and especially religious fronts. The dancing plague itself is then described in great detail as are the attempts at curing the many who were so tragically afflicted. Since the ultimate cure may seem rather astonishing to the modern reader, the author finally compares this plague with other more or less equivalent events in the modern world. Consequently, the last chapter makes for fascinating reading on the nature of the human mind. The writing style is elegant and authoritative, scholarly but accessible and most engaging. This book can be enjoyed by anyone, but those with a penchant for medieval history and for psychology will be in for a special treat.

This is a truly remarkable true story. John Waller's amazing in-depth research explores, exposes & seeks to explain one of the most remarkable, strange and unexplainable events in recoded history. A well written, interesting telling of this bizarre event. I'm intrigued by weird true events & this book delivers - I thoroughly enjoyed it!

Great Concept but Weak Execution

"A Time to Dance a Time to Die" sounds better than it reads. Its the story of crazed dancing in 16th century Strasbourg involving several hundred people who are unable to stop except from exhaustion. Mr. Waller attempts to find the source of illness. He see the origins in the brutal conditions, the hunger and poverty of the citizens of Strasbourg, accentuated by the religiousity of those times.

But really what is so significant about a few hundred people going a bit nuts five hundred years ago? Supposedly there were deaths but probably not even twenty and its not completely clear that the cause was the dancing. The books title promises something more ghastly, a society gone haywire when in fact it was probably less then one percent of the population of the city involved. And given the paucity of sources about these events, it gives the book a hazy, unreal quality. Waller tries to be historically accurate and yet there is a feeling of thinness, of question marks around the most basic facts of the story.

Frankly, I think this book could have been a forty page essay.

The predominant form of insurance rate regulation, prior approval, began in the late 1940s following the V. S. Supreme Court decision in United States vs. South-Eastern Underwriters Association, 322 V. S. 533 (1944). This was an anti trust case involving one of four regional associa� tions of insurance companies, which constituted an insurance cartel. The case struck down an earlier decision, Paul vs. Virginia, 8 Wall 168 (1869), holding that the business of insurance was not interstate commerce and hence that state regulation of insurance did not violate the commerce clause of the V. S. Constitution. Following South-Eastern Underwriters, the Vnited States Congress passed the McCarran-Ferguson Act, which held that continued state regulation and taxation of insurance was in the public interest. The act also held that the federal antitrust laws would not apply to insurance to the extent that the business was adequately regulated by state law. (See V. S. Department of Justice 1977.
