About the Author
Samuel Enoch Stumpf was Emeritus Professor of Philosophy and Emeritus Professor of Law at Vanderbilt University prior to his death in 1998, at the age of eighty. He earned a B.S. in Business and Finance from the University of California at Los Angeles, a B.D. in Theology from Andover Newton Theological School, and a Ph.D. in Philosophy from the University of Chicago. He joined the Vanderbilt faculty in 1948 and served as Chair of the Philosophy Department from 1952 to 1967. After a five-year term as President of Cornell College, Professor Stumpf returned to Vanderbilt, where he remained until his retirement in 1984. Professor Stumpf’s publications include Democratic Manifesto (1954), Morality and the Law (1966), and four McGraw-Hill textbooks: Socrates to Sartre: A History of Philosophy (1966; 6th ed., posthumous, 1999); Philosophical Readings: Selected Problems (1971; 4th ed., 1994); Philosophy: History and Problems (1971; 5th ed., 1994); and Elements of Philosophy: An Introduction (1979; 3rd ed., 1993).

James Fieser is an Assistant Professor of philosophy at the University of Tennessee at Martin. He received his Ph.D. from Purdue University’s Department of Philosophy (1983, 1986). He has published articles on the topics of the philosophy of religion, rights theory, environmental ethics, moral skepticism, David Hume, and Thomas Aquinas. He has created several World Wide Web sites in philosophy, including the Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy.

The cover is almost like new, and the sides of the book are a little stained yet excusable.
Some underlines and marks were found on several pages.
Nevertheless, holistically speaking, it is satisfactory . I like this book.

Excellent, makes difficult concepts lucid and understandable

Many times when reading philosophy, one comes away with the idea that either the ideas in and of themselves are extremely difficult to understand, that the terminology is opaque and extremely abstract, or that the author is incapable of elucidating the ideas involved. This book overcomes all of these pitfalls, and for that reason, it is a great place to begin the study of philosophy. It follows the chronological order of the birth of philosophy in ancient Greece, and the inestimable magnitude of this development in the history of Western culture. The author then develop the major philosophical trends, from ancient to Medieval, Renaissance, Early Modern, Enlightenment, and into the Modern periods.

Philosophy does not occur in a vacuum. It is deeply affected by the political, economic, religious, intellectual and social milieu in which it is created. This book sets these essential factors out. The authors also discuss individual philosophers in terms of the ideas that they addressed, as well as the other philosophers that influenced them. The authors discuss this action and reaction, and its effect upon the development of intellectual thought. The really great thing about the book is that it does so without being pedantic and abstruse. There is no narcissistic demonstration of the ability to use arcane language or impenetrable phraseology. Everything is clear, concise and correct. A perfect place to start the study of philosophy. If you don't want to study philosophy further, but want to learn enough to have a basic familiarity with this important aspect of our intellectual heritage, this book is also perfect. A Fine Survey of Western Philosophical Thought

This book, now in its seventh edition, is one of the better histories of western philosophical thought and development. In this edition, Fieser takes the reins, building upon the work of the late Samuel Stumpf, respected philosopher at Vanderbilt. This is a book that is comprehensive, yet fairly accessible as well. The beginner to philosophy might have difficulty with sections dealing with the more elaborate thinkers like Hegel or even Heidegger, but on balance, I think even a beginner will be able to get a great deal out of this book.
Through careful study of this book, the reader will begin to see how western society has been thoroughly shaped by the philosophies described here. While philosophy is regularly dismissed as irrelevant theorizing that has no bearing on the real world (a criticism that is not altogether invalid), what can be seen from reading this book is that ideas matter, and they have consequences that thoroughly shape the 'real world'.
Stumpf/Feiser begin with the pre-Socratic philosophers, and then devote considerable time to analyzing Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle. It is Plato and Aristotle that Western thought owes its inheritance, and this can be seen in the treatment of Augustine and Aquinas and the outworkings of their philosophies/theological approaches and necessities.
Modernist philosophy gets a hard look in this book as well, starting with Descartes and moving up through Kant. Existentialism, both Christian and atheist, are examined through Kierkegaard and Sartre/Camus, and the book also devotes a decent amount of attention to Nietzche and analytic philosophy, the forebears of postmodernism.
In each case, the analyses in this book are solid, and while the treatment is certainly not exhaustive, many of the major ideas of the philosophers mentioned are handled quite well and in mostly understandable and accessible ways.
I will register only 2 minor complaints. The book's citationing approach is not good at all. The book regularly quotes from the works of the philosophers in question, but does not have formal citations. This is very fixable and should be fixed in the next edition, there's no reason why the citations shouldn't be in here. Secondly, postmodernism itself is still not dealt with as comprehensively as it should be. While Rorty's thought is discussed, Foucault, Derrida, and others are not and they should be in order to present an adequate picture of contemporary philosophy. In addition, the work of Plantinga also deserves mention but is excluded.
But overall, this is a fine survey - more advanced than Grenz's survey 'Primer on Postmodernism' (which I would recommend for those wanting a survey treatment on Derrida and Foucault), but still accessible for most anyone interested in a substantive treatment of Western philosophy.

About the Author
Amelia Phillips is a graduate of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and has worked for more than 30 years in government, private industry, and academics. She has designed distance education classes and e-commerce, computer forensics, and network security programs at several community colleges. Amelia is Chair of the Pure and Applied Science Division at Highline Community College, a Fulbright Scholar, and a recent PhD in computer security.

Bill Nelson has been a computer forensics examiner for a Fortune 50 company for the past 12 years and has developed high-tech investigation programs for professional organizations and colleges. His previous experience includes AFIS software engineering and reserve police work.

Frank Enfinger, from Suquamish, Washington, is a tenured faculty member at North Seattle Community College and a Computer Forensics Specialist with a local police department. He holds a degree in Computer Science.

Christopher Steuart is one of the founders and the staff attorney for IT Forensics.com. Previously, he was an information systems security specialist for a Fortune 50 company and the United States government. Chris resides in Seattle, Washington.

Wrong Book to use for College Course!

College Professors Listen Up! This is not the book to use for teaching Computer Forensics and Investigation. I am a student in a graduate course for Computer Forensics. The fact that this book uses strictly commercial software for all the exercises is sad. Especially since there are many Open Source tools available that can be used to conduct Computer Forensics. The software included with this book requires that the buyer obtain a license from the vendor, before the software can be used. Then the license is only good for 120 days. This is not fair to the buyer especially for students, who usually have no intent of keeping the book past the end of the semester. It would be better to use a book for the class that the students would find worth keeping for the long term. Also, a book that uses Open Source tools for the examples/exercises, would provide much more value to the students. A much better book to use would be 'Incident Response and Computer Forensics, 2nd Ed' by Chri Prosise, Kevin Mandia and Matt Pepe. If this book does not suite you, then I am sure that you can find another book to use.

This book is better than the previous edition, but there are still problems with the information. As another student posted about a case project. The evidence proved the employee innocent. This is just the beginning of other problems that you will find with the book.

It is introduction to Computer Forensics

This is a textbook for computer forensics. It should be introduction to computer forensics. The book discuss overview of procedures and expectations of a computer forensic investigator. The technical sections in the book uses software to find information. Unfortunately, this information is basic and review for computer nerds.

THIS IS AN UPDATE. I just finished using this book for my class. We went through all 14 chapters: the CD is missing files, and the documentation is not in-sync with the demo software. The school contacted Course and Course is still trying to figure it out (maybe version 3). I am not a legal expert so I don't know if the procedures are right, but they made sense. The book focus is the process of making the extracted information legal. All the software is either demo or limited version. Majority of the projects uses Drivespy which function uses DOS (Win 9x). Sorry, you are out-of-luck if you don't have Win 9x computer. They have limited version of Forsenics Toolkit that works on XP, but the book only uses on a few projects.

Teaches you the spirit of meditation and how to find your own happiness.

I got this book along with "Why Meditate" (from the same author) when I needed help for my depression and I wanted to learn more about meditation. This book did really well with that. While this book can show you a lot about the philosophies and the teaching of meditation, "Why Meditate" functions as a sort of "companion book" that teaches you more of the technical side while this book serves as more of a "spiritual guide." However, learning the philosophies and insight of meditation as a school of thought is essential to practicing and mastering meditation.

This book provides you with stories from many walks of life about their source of happiness (or lack thereof) in order to compare and contrast what constitutes real happiness. This gives you incredible insight into meditation, and the author also gives you small exercises (which are parts of what make up the whole of meditation) to better familiarize yourself with it. If you're desperately seeking happiness in your own life, drop everything now and get this book ASAP. You'd be surprised how just one book can change your life.

I wound up buying this book more than once for some of my friends when they needed help going through some tough times like I have. I find it as one of the best "self-help" books out there in order to find your true happiness.

I am a Christian but I loved this book. My perception was that he was explaining where some ideas he mentions are coming from but he was not pushing Buddhism. I took it more as psychology and how our ego (which is really non-existent bc it's only a thought in your mind) ((which isnt the mind also ephemeral? There's no "hard copy" existence of a mind!)) takes over thus producing anger (if we are feeling threatened, fearful, insecure), envious (vs happy) for the other, prideful, agitated, etc. If we truly want to be happy and at peace within, we need to ask ourselves : is this thought/feeling life-giving or life-draining? Most "suffering" thoughts (he calls them toxic) are life-draining, right? So, "letting go" of these life-draining thoughts (replacing them with life-giving thoughts) thru meditation and practice, is the way to true peace and happiness.

As an example, for me, one thing that really makes me mad, upset, pissed off, about my DH is that he is almost always late for everything!
I get the pets settled, the house closed up, me ready and then have to wait and wait and wait. It's VERY embarrassing to me when others are
waiting for us... I feel this is a very disrespectful way to be. Keeping people waiting when you have been given the time (clock time) to leave/meet. This happened while I was reading this book, and I took one of the exercises on anger to heart and practiced it.... It worked...
I found that, yes he was being disrespectful to me and the others but that it was my mind, my SELF, my ego that was producing the anger within me. I could choose to let my thoughts control me and drain me, or I could choose to let go of my insecurity of how others think of his insensitivity themselves (bc it was not MY fault we were late) and therefore only think life-giving thoughts (being with our friends). I felt SO much better, then!
This is a biggie for me. And like the author states, it takes practice practice practice to come to inner peace and happiness. (Obviously I have a ways to go on this bc I did ask myself: does he CHOOSE to be rude and make ppl wait on purpose? No. And do the others get peeved about waiting for him? Maybe, but that again is on them and their "practice" and journey thru this life.)

I can't recommend this book highly enough!

a book that has helped true transformation in people I know (excuse the hyperbole)

Here is an example of a message that I received from a friend who read Happiness...
"I'm flying. The two big things for me have been: While I know I'm a responsible person toward my friends and people I interact with, I hadn't recognized how much I had emotionally blocked out other people in general and the effect it was having on my mind. From a purely selfish perspective, I now see that the more I focus on empathizing with people who I have no connection with, the calmer and clearer my mind is and the happier I am. I didn't recognize the price I was paying for not wanting to empathize with people who don't have a direct bearing on my life.

Secondly, I hadn't really conceptualized the difference between pleasure and happiness. Upon reading it in Ricard's book, it was immediately apparent to me and I realize how much my emphasis on the former at the expense of the latter has been a mistake. I think I viewed emotionally being engaged with strangers and people "out there" in general as a distraction and waste of time, at best, but hadn't realized that all the time I was engaging with them, albeit in a negative way.

Guy, between 'The Joy of Living, Unlocking the Secrets and Science' and "Happiness" I'm now in a total blissed-out state. A couple of the things I've realized is that in terms of my own sustained happiness it's in my strong self-interest to try to be more compassionate toward people. Just starting to think that way has allowed me to exorcise a lot of petty conflicts and tensions that unnecessarily clutter my mind. I am so much calmer now. "

This book is VERY well worth reading. It is a must read for anyone who wants to reach beyond their material goals, and realizes that the underlying goal is happiness. It is written in a clear manner that seems to resonate with many readers.

Emotionally Riveting, Hilarious, and Smart

The Last Seraph takes a story older than dirt and breathes fascinating new life into it in a way only Anne Rice has come close to touching. Sataniel has all the character of a Jim Butcher creation and truly garners the reader's sympathy, attention, and fondness. This is a must-read for fans of theological fiction and dark fantasy.

Absolutely worth it!

A beautiful story! The author uses her words to capture her audience and bond them with the characters. The style and writing is easy to read but contains complex ideas. Comedy, tragedy, romance, and mythical action all combine into an amazing book. I highly recommend this book!

Cover to cover in one sitting.

In all fairness I'd probably give this 4.5 stars instead of 5 but my other option was 4 and I'm feeling generous. The half star deduction would be for some of the names used. Call me nit picky (I am), they just irritated me.

That negativity out of the way, I'd say overall this was a surprisingly enjoyable read from a first time novelist. The general story and themes are nothing new. Anyone who's progressed beyond Dick and Jane in their literary adventures probably has a pretty good idea of where things are going five minutes in. That's not necessarily a bad thing... Some things are almost universally enjoyable when presented in the right light.

The journey is really what makes a good read and the journey is definitely where this novel shines. Sataniel is petulant in a way that only an immortal with eons to brood can be. I found myself wanting to smack him for behaving like an angsty teenager while simultaneously wanting to lock myself in a room far away from Alex for being such a... well... woman... they are so mysterious and terrifying... Yet I couldn't help but fall for her underlying upbeat nature and genuinely human character while finding plenty of justification for his resentment of her presence.

I don't want to give too much away here... If it wasn't obvious, love or hate I could understand and empathize with the primary characters on a personal level. I found myself attached and unable to let go of knowing their fates and thus unable to set the book down. I read from the moment I picked it up until I was done and while the ending did not leave me with much in the way of unanswered questions, it did leave me hungry for more.

Fortunately I can assume from the subtext containing the word "saga" that the intention is for there to be a sequel or three or perhaps an endless stream of novels featuring the characters or at least the setting of the first. I find myself speculating heavily on where things will go... Something interesting has to occur to justify many sequels, yes? Will there be a massive angelic uprising? Will humanity face a "rapture" of an evolutionary sort a la Childhood's End?

Will Flashdance find itself re-enacted in heaven? Oh come on I cannot be the only one to make the obvious connection between the fact that the main character's name is Alex in Flashdance... She's a dancer... Alex in The Last Seraph... Also a dancer... Alex in Flashdance... Played by a Jennifer (Beals)... Alex in The Last Seraph... Written by a Jennifer (Rehnay)... I could go on and on!

Correlation = Causation.

Anyway, all humor aside this really was a good read and you could do far worse in a new author than giving Ms. Rehnay a go.
