Independent learning tool

This is an excellent book, even for those without background knowledge of the topic. It is thorough, and easy to understand. I was introduced to the topic in my college class, and have learned a great deal more, in detail in this book. This is an excellent selection for students, professionals, and people with a natural interest in the subject.

Brain Research Classic Reference

Going through this book was like reading a 350 page article in Scientific American. We find in "Left Brain, Right Brain" the same tone and the same level of science writing. And like for a magazine article, it is all about a single topic: brain lateralization. Even though the book is written in a very clear language it could still pose a challenge for the lay reader. For the jargon is a bit technical at times. But this kind of vocabulary should please the undergraduate student looking for an introduction to contemporary research in cognitive neuroscience. The book has been revised five times since its first publication in 1981. The last edition dates back to 1998, so it obviously does not discuss the latest findings. But most of the material remains valid today. What makes this book especially valuable is that it covers the important period when most of the modern tools of investigation were first introduced. The technology has since been refined, and so has the research. But the basic structure of the brain had already been established in this pioneering phase when scientists started to use a variety of scanning devices to study the brain. Because this book was for a long time the only one to offer for the non specialist a complete overview of the research that was conducted in this exhilarating period it has become a neuroscience classic reference. I would recommend it to anyone interested in the history of the scientific investigation of the human brain.

The book is a collection of numerous extended tracts on various subjects, along with detailed advice for writing tutors. A lot of the advice revolves around being able to coach the students into learning for themselves, with a minimal amount of nudging from the tutor to ensure that the students are correctly assimilating the material.

It also looks at [possible] cultural differences between having native English students and ESL students. The latter might sometimes expect broader advice about dealing with cultural differences in a majority English speaking community.

Best Tool for Women!

This book lived up to its reviews, and far exceeded all of my expectations for greatness. I wish I'd had this as a teenager before I destroyed my 37 years with abusive relationships & problems related to my lack of self-worth (due to childhood trauma, abuse & rapes). Then again, I might not have been ready to absorb it then.
In any case, this is a MUST HAVE for any woman who's ever been abused, exploited, used or had a string of abusive relationships--or wants to avoid them, meaning every woman alive. Every page described common errors women have made,and I related to all of them! This book covers every single situation anyone could encounter in relationships, even what red flags to look for on 1st dates, with real-life examples everyone will recognize. I found myself laughing at some of my mistakes & grateful for the explicit instructions on how to avoid repeating them.
It is now my most-valuable tool towards one day having a mutually healthy life partner. In the meantime, it also will help with all of my other relationships with friends, family, co-workers, etc. I've written in the margins, highlighted just about every page, and will refer to it time & time again as life's challenges give me opportunities to practice the wisdom between these priceless pages. It will be the best money you've ever spent & you're worth it. :-)

A Great Book!

What Smart Women know is a must-read for any female. It begins a little slow, but picks up into the middle with some GREAT tips on how to live your own life. It will put things in proper perspective on everything from: getting over a failed relationship, what to expect during the healing process, and most importantly: how a smart woman should conduct herself in future relationships. It also deals with women dating after divorce, a section on how to spot an abusive man, as well as how to talk to your partner about safe sex. It is such a great book and would certainly make a great gift for any young woman.
