Making Marriage Work: A History of Marriage and Divorce in the Twentieth-Century United States, by Kristin Celello

By the end of World War I, the skyrocketing divorce rate in the United States had generated a deep-seated anxiety about marriage. This fear drove middle-class couples to seek advice, both professional and popular, in order to strengthen their relationships. In Making Marriage Work, historian Kristin Celello offers an insightful and wide-ranging account of marriage and divorce in America in the twentieth century, focusing on the development of the idea of marriage as "work". Throughout, Celello illuminates the interaction of marriage and divorce over the century and reveals how the idea that marriage requires work became part of Americans' collective consciousness.

Review
It certainly claims a place among works about the social history of American marriage.--INTAMS

A lively history. . . . Accessible and enjoyable too.--The Feminist Review

A lucid description of the rise and sociological impact of the concept that spouses must work hard to make their marriage work.--Catholic News Service

Fascinating. . . . Would be an excellent addition to a course on the sociology of marriage, family or gender roles.--Journal of Social History

An intellectual and cultural history of modern marriage and divorce leavened with rich insights into married love and labor. Celello revises and refines the history of twentieth-century marriage to a story of experts successfully persuading couples that marriage requires work.--The Journal of American History

The book's strength is in demonstrating the tenacity of the idea that marriages can be saved through hard work and the persistence of gender imbalance, which continues to place the burden of the effort on women.--Choice

Review
Through most of history, people worked in their marriages, not on them. This highly readable book traces the way that marriage 'experts' developed and changed the 'rules' for marital work over the course of the twentieth century, even as they have continued to make wives more responsible than husbands for getting the work done.--Stephanie Coontz, The Evergreen State College, author of Marriage, A History: How Love Conquered Marriage

Shrewd, lucid, and compelling, Making Marriage Work is a revelation. Celello shows how family sociologists and marriage counselors advanced an implicit ideology that virtually every marriage (regardless of its quality) was worth saving, that hard work can make almost any marriage successful, and that making marriage work was first and foremost women's responsibility. This book is a model of the kind of engaged history that can inform contemporary debates.--Steven Mintz, Columbia University

Essential Technique for Strings (Book 3)
By Customer B65
A okay lesson book. The first part teaches you how to play in third and second position, harmonic shifting, and first/third position shifting. Like the first two volumes in the ‘Essential’ series, there are play-along tracks included. The exception here is that the music service comes to an abrupt end after lesson 76 with no explanation (there are about 236 lessons in the book). Maybe the budget ran out? That's too bad, it‘s more interesting and fun learning the lessons playing along and hearing how it’s supposed to sound.

If you want to buy a violin method for learn violin, this is the indicated. The book has a very friendly and clear explanations about the music concepts. The diagrams are very useful, easy to understand and reinforce every time your knowledge. In the other side the support material as mp3, videos, software for music notation and practices are all very very useful. I was surprised with this method. I compared this method with the traditional Suzuki books and honestly, I found the Essential Elements very superior than Suzuki. I recommend it 100%. Obviously this method required that you be constant.

A detailed look at some of the more modern issues of hydrodynamic stability, including transient growth, eigenvalue spectra, secondary instability. It presents analytical results and numerical simulations, linear and selected nonlinear stability methods. By including classical results as well as recent developments in the field of hydrodynamic stability and transition, the book can be used as a textbook for an introductory, graduate-level course in stability theory or for a special-topics fluids course. It is equally of value as a reference for researchers in the field of hydrodynamic stability theory or with an interest in recent developments in fluid dynamics. Stability theory has seen a rapid development over the past decade, this book includes such new developments as direct numerical simulations of transition to turbulence and linear analysis based on the initial-value problem.

Review

From the reviews:

SIAM REVIEW

"This book presents a modern treatment of stability in shear flows. Stability theory has seen a number of classic treatments over the years…Schmid and Henningson’s book builds on these and offers much new material relevant to stability in shear flows…The MATLAB codes included in the appendix and a discussion of the effects of rounding error and resolution on the computations of eigenvalues of linear stability operators will be particularly helpful for students and researchers as they get started with stability computations…As the basis for a course, the first part of the book would permit students to build a solid foundation in classical and modern stability theory, while a selection of advanced topics from the second half of the book could be treated later in the course or through projects and independent study by students."

ZENTRALBLATT MATH

"The book addresses to graduate students as well as to a broad community of researchers with a basic knowledge of fundamental fluid dynamics…The topics are treated with mathematical rigor while the physical motivation and usefulness of mathematical concepts is kept close at hand. The work is elegantly structured, and the graphical material is very suggestive."

refer as bible
By a-sekimo
This book provides us a lot of knowledge about stability analysis for researchers in fluid dynamics. Especially, I would have wanted to know the basic of linear transient growth and corresponding adjoint problems, which are extended to non-linear case recently by some top-level researchers. This book could be referenced as a bible for those who study the stability of shear flows.

Sara Baartman and the Hottentot Venus: A Ghost Story and a Biography, by Clifton Crais, Pamela Scully

Displayed on European stages from 1810 to 1815 as the Hottentot Venus, Sara Baartman was one of the most famous women of her day, and also one of the least known. As the Hottentot Venus, she was seen by Westerners as alluring and primitive, a reflection of their fears and suppressed desires. But who was Sara Baartman? Who was the woman who became the Hottentot Venus? Based on research and interviews that span three continents, Sara Baartman and the Hottentot Venus tells the entwined histories of an illusive life and a famous icon. In doing so, the book raises questions about the possibilities and limits of biography for understanding those who live between and among different cultures.

In reconstructing Baartman's life, the book traverses the South African frontier and its genocidal violence, cosmopolitan Cape Town, the ending of the slave trade, the Industrial Revolution, the French Revolution, the Napoleonic Wars, London and Parisian high society, and the rise of racial science. The authors discuss the ramifications of discovering that when Baartman went to London, she was older than originally assumed, and they explore the enduring impact of the Hottentot Venus on ideas about women, race, and sexuality. The book concludes with the politics involved in returning Baartman's remains to her home country, and connects Baartman's story to her descendants in nineteenth- and twentieth-century South Africa.

Sara Baartman and the Hottentot Venus offers the authoritative account of one woman's life and reinstates her to the full complexity of her history.

From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. While the body of Sara Baartman (1789–1815), also known as the Hottentot Venus, has been the subject of intense Western scrutiny (she was regarded as a paradoxical freak of race and sexuality, both alluring and primitive) and exploitation to the point of postmortem dissection, little is known about her life beyond her careers as sideshow exhibit and posthumous icon for a variety of causes, from artifact repatriation to the evils of science. Crais (The Politics of Evil) and Scully (Liberating the Family) chase down obscure references to Baartman's life in South Africa and discover a rich if difficult life: a woman who loved and lost and traveled farther (from Cambedoo and Cape Town to London and Paris) than many of her peers. Her life personifies the shames of colonialism, slavery and gender persecution, but Baartman showed too much independence to be reduced to mere victim or symbol (The more iconic Sara Baartman became, the more she stood for a range of causes, the less complicated her past became). The authors dig deep into the limited remaining evidence but the biography wears its research lightly, a backdrop to this well-written and fascinating story of a woman who remains an elusive figure. From Booklist
Sara Baartman, a young South African woman brought to London in 1810 and displayed seminude to show off her ample bottom, was named the Hottentot Venus by her captors and managers. Historians Crais and Scully examine the cultural context of Baartman’s exploitation in Europe as Westerners grappled with issues of race and sex and later racialized science. Baartman attracted the attention of prominent British abolitionists and French scientists as well as voyeurs. After five years of researching archives and libraries and conducting genealogical research to uncover some of Baartman’s relatives, the authors also look beyond Baartman’s life as a curiosity and an exhibit to explore her life as a woman. Crais and Scully place Baartman’s contributions in such areasas therights of the unlawfully detained, global feminism, and later—when her body was returned to South Africa from France—the politics of indigenous identity. Readers who enjoyed African Queen (2007),by Rachel Holmes, will appreciate this further examination of the life of an extraordinary woman. --Vanessa Bush

Review
"Professors Clifton Crais and Pamela Scully of Emory University have done an excellent job not only of telling this rebarbative story but of putting it into the context of its time. . . . No one, however, has succeeded as well as Crais and Scully in illuminating not only her important role as icon and symbol but, so important, the human being behind them. Because of their diligent research and their deep understanding of the era in which she lived--along with their sensitivity to our own time and concern--they have truly given us the 'living breathing person' that was 'Sara Baartman, the human being who was ultimately destroyed by an illusion.'"--Martin Rubin, Los Angeles Times

"[Crais and Scully] chase down obscure references to Baartman's life in South Africa and discover a rich if difficult life. The authors dig deep into the limited remaining evidence but the biography wears its research lightly, a backdrop to this well-written and fascinating story of a woman who remains an elusive figure."--Publishers Weekly (Starred Review)

"The authors…look beyond Baartman's life as a curiosity and an exhibit to explore her life as a woman. Crais and Scully place Baartman's contributions in such areas as the rights of the unlawfully detained, global feminism, and later--when her body was returned to South Africa from France--the politics of indigenous identity. Readers who enjoyed African Queen (2007), by Rachel Holmes, will appreciate this further examination of the life of an extraordinary woman."--Vanessa Bush, Booklist

"This is a thrilling, provocative and interesting exploration. The reader learns about how Baartman's life was transformed once she became the Hottentot Venus, and is given a vivid snapshot of what the sociopolitical and ideological climate of Europe was when Baartman reached its shores. Crais and Scully literally recover Baartman--the public spectacle and the 'scientific discovery'--as so much more. Not only is this book a fascinating read, it will also have done much to restore the historical record in Europe and the US. It is an important and necessary contribution to the existing discourse on Sara Baartman's impact on contemporary ideas of race, sexuality and the European conception of primitivity."--Kaila Adia Story, Times Higher Education

"Clifton Crais and Pamela Scully explore the curious juxtaposition of celebrity and degradation that followed Sara Baartman after she was brought to Europe and put on exhibit, an 'ethnopornograhic freak.' But Crais and Scully are interested in much more than the Hottentot Venus; their aim is to honor Baartman, and they do so with biography that is speculative as well as research-driven."--Joe Taylor, Foreword Magazine

"This biography faced a formidable research challenge in resurrecting a forgotten woman. . . . With such a seemingly unknowable subject, the authors refrain from putting words into Sara's mouth. Rather they reconstruct her life and times, placing her in context. . . . Remarkable."--Lucy Sussex, The Age

"The authors stitch together the pieces of Baartman's life--no small task with so little known about the woman herself--and at times veer necessarily toward the speculative. They . . . admirably attempt to look past the symbol to the woman herself, who led an extraordinary life amid rapidly shifting social and scientific cultures."--Julie Biando Edwards, Library Journal

"This meticulously researched book drags Baartman out of the ugly mythology that characterised her European life and restores her to humanity. It is a model biography because the sources for her real life are scarce and the authors, both academics, had to tease a rich life out of very frail strands of information."--Bruce Elder, Sydney Morning Herald

"[Sara Baartman and the Hottentot Venus] stands out for the lengths it goes to present the person behind the myth. Crais and Scully uncovered details unknown or long forgotten about her life before she became the Hottentot Venus, her personal dealings when she was off the stage, and some of the characters who fill out her story. The authors gather these facts together with a narrative style that richly evokes the smells, sights, sounds, and mores of the worlds in which Baartman dwelled."--Susan Frith, Johns Hopkins Magazine

"In this beautifully written and multilayered biography, Emory University professors Crais and Scully distinguish between the woman and the exhibit in order to restore the ghost to her own narrative. Tapping a wide range of archives, the authors reconstruct the Gonaqua society into which she was born and the Cape society where she worked as a domestic servant in the late 18th century before moving on to more familiar European territory."--C. Higgs, Choice

"The authors are to be commended on an illuminating analysis of the complexities of contact between Europeans and other cultures in the somewhat misnamed Age of Enlightenment. They have produced a gripping biography of an extraordinary woman."--Barbara Bush, Women's History Review

"[T]he book is a significant contribution to the literature on Baartman which will become essential reading for anyone interested in her life, as a living woman or academic subject. The impressive archival work that has been used to recapture so much of Baartman's elusive life is illuminating; although necessarily speculative in parts, on the whole, the book's arguments have been grounded in a well-contextualised and evocative history of the Cape region, London and Paris. Given abiding interest in Baartman's life, the book's accessible style will recommend it to a wide audience, both within and outside the halls of academia."--Sadiah Qureshi, Journal of Imperial and Commonwealth History

"Ghosts are by nature elusive; their tales designed to haunt. Yet this rich 'ghost story' cum biography is elegantly turned, contesting accepted notions. It is a valuable contribution."--Maureen Isaacson, Sunday Independent

"Crais and Scully's extensive new research has produced a rich and interesting biography that is a worthwhile read even for those familiar with the story. As well as providing the most detailed account of Baartman's life, the book is an illuminating insight into the broader contexts of colonial society at the Cape. . . . The real achievement of Crais and Scully's book lies in its readability and the fresh insights it provides into the life of one of Africa's most famous women."--Sadiah Qureshi, History Today

"The excellent historical illustrations throughout help the narrative, making the descriptions read like a movie script."--Margaret H. McFadden, Salem Press

"Crais and Scully . . . point us in the direction of more nuanced studies of the relationship between exploitation, complicity and negotiation, and of the relationship between individual lives and the larger social, political and economic landscape in which they are lived. This is an excellent and provocative study that invites debate."--Shireen Hassim, Labor Bulletin

"The great strength of this book is its readability with vivid, even poetic, descriptions of everything from the African landscape and urban community to the theater district of London."--Martin S. Staum, Journal of Modern History

"Crais and Scully have crafted an admirable book--informative, thought-provoking, and a pleasure to read."--Stacey Hynd, Journal of the Historical Association

Outstanding work that could have been better.
By L. Comerford
I am a forty-eight year student of Asian martial arts, with Cheng Man-Ching's T'ai Chi at the center of the last forty-five years of study. I became interested in the Western Martial Arts movement in general and the longsword in particular after seeing some of the ARMA videos on Youtube and reading some of the online articles. This is the first book on the subject I've purchased. I'm working my way through it at a slow pace for two reasons: the material reveals fundamental principles of martial art in a new context and with a new perspective (a good thing), and the content of the drawings and their relationship to the text are difficult to understand (not a good thing). Not impossible, just not quite clear. Despite this unnecessary difficulty I rate the book five stars. The content is worth the effort needed to extract it. This is not to fault the authors too strongly. Making dynamic interactions clear with static images has never been easy. I'd like to suggest that two changes could relieve this problem: 1. Label the combatants so the attacker, the starting guards and the form of attack are clear. 2. Reduce the size of the figures so more intermediate states could be shown. The latter change would compensate for the visual ambiguity of the arrows the illustrator used to show the sword path, and possibly give a clearer indication of the timing used. The latter change would make "Indes" and the mechanics and timing of changing your actions from "Nach" to "Vor" clearer.

Despite its shortcomings I expect this book to play a continuing role in my practice and I recommend it.

and like many in the early days
By Drew Schulz
This is a perfectly acceptable book, as long as you just read the translation of Ringeck. The interpretations provided by the modern authors are dated, since this book is more than a decade old, and modern HEMA was only just getting started. Their concept of footwrk was clearly not based on high-speed testing of the techniques, and like many in the early days, they seem memorized by the sheer lethality of the longsword, going on about it at length. Buy this book for the translation, and skip everything else. Especially John Clement's introduction, and any other part where the "blocking with the flat" is mentioned.

Well researched, common-sense approach
By A.Bodhi
It is difficult to resurrect something which has died and been long forgotten. Many try, some become lost in their own self importance, and a few, like the authors of this book, really engage a deeply introspective look into the martial practices of yore, without allowing their personal biases getting in the way of their assessments of historically documented artifacts.

What is offered within the pages of this manual is a clear-cut approach of how the structure of the long-sword is wielded in conjunction with an adversary hell-bent on the other's actual demise.

Objectively written, taking a scientific approach, steeped in a real understanding of the contextual nature of close-quarters-killing combat of that time frame, the authors and artists assemble a systematic means with which to inspect how Sigmund Ringeck thought this killing weapon could be optimized.

An easy to understand text followed with very well done drawings of the necessary actions and counter actions, the reader finds a manual from which learning can commence from the solid information presented.

This book is one of Paladin Press' gems, and I recommend this manual as an essential reference point when one wishes to delve into the realities of European medieval martial practices. I had previously owned the hardback edition, only to loan it out, never to see it again. I settled on purchasing a new paperback edition as I merely needed and wanted to replace this very important document to my library. I believe to be of great historical significance and a work of art, to boot.

A. Bodhi

The Nature of Computation, by Cristopher Moore, Stephan Mertens

Computational complexity is one of the most beautiful fields of modern mathematics, and it is increasingly relevant to other sciences ranging from physics to biology. But this beauty is often buried underneath layers of unnecessary formalism, and exciting recent results like interactive proofs, cryptography, and quantum computing are usually considered too "advanced" to show to the typical student. The aim of this book is to bridge both gaps by explaining the deep ideas of theoretical computer science in a clear and enjoyable fashion, making them accessible to non computer scientists and to computer scientists who finally want to understand what their formalisms are actually telling.

This book gives a lucid and playful explanation of the field, starting with P and NP-completeness. The authors explain why the P vs. NP problem is so fundamental, and why it is so hard to resolve. They then lead the reader through the complexity of mazes and games; optimization in theory and practice; randomized algorithms, interactive proofs, and pseudorandomness; Markov chains and phase transitions; and the outer reaches of quantum computing.

At every turn, they use a minimum of formalism, providing explanations that are both deep and accessible. The book is intended for graduates and undergraduates, scientists from other areas who have long wanted to understand this subject, and experts who want to fall in love with this field all over again.

Review

"To put it bluntly: this book rocks! It's 900+ pages of awesome. It somehow manages to combine the fun of a popular book with the intellectual heft of a textbook, so much so that I don't know what to call it (but whatever the genre is, there needs to be more of it!)." -- Scott Aaronson, Massachusetts Institute of Technology

"A creative, insightful, and accessible introduction to the theory of computing, written with a keen eye toward the frontiers of the field and a vivid enthusiasm for the subject matter." -- Jon Kleinberg, Cornell University

"If you want to learn about complexity classes, scaling laws in computation, undecidability, randomized algorithms, how to prepare a dinner with Pommard, Quail and Roquefort, or the new ideas that quantum theory brings to computation, this is the right book. It offers a wonderful tour through many facets of computer science. It is precise and gets into details when necessary, but the main thread is always at hand, and entertaining anecdotes help to keep the pace." -- Marc Mzard, Universit de Paris Sud, Orsay

"A treasure trove of ideas, concepts and information on algorithms and complexity theory. Serious material presented in the most delightful manner!" -- Vijay Vazirani, Georgia Instituute of Technology

"A fantastic and unique book - a must-have guide to the theory of computation, for physicists and everyone else." -- Riccardo Zecchina, Politecnico di Torino

"The Nature of Computation (TNoC) is a comprehensive, accessible, and highly enjoyable book that conveys the key intellectual contributions of the theory of computing. The project took off as an effort to present theoretical computer science to physicists, but it is equally suitable for any science graduate who is curious to explore beautiful and deep ideas related to the mathematical structure of problems. ... TNoC provides not just a window through which people from other disciplines can get glimpses of the interesting nuggets from computer science, but also provides an entertaining open house session where a visitor can meet various deep ideas and understand the core arguments behind key results." --Haris Aziz, SIGACT News Book Review Column

"The book is highly recommended for all interested readers: in or out of courses, students undergraduate, researchers in other fields eager to learn the subject, or scholars already in the field who wish to enrich their current understanding. It makes for a great textbook in a conventional theory of computing course, as I can testify from recent personal experience (I used it once; I'll use it again!). With its broad and deep wealth of information, it would be a top contender for one of my "desert island" books. [The Nature of Computation] speaks directly, clearly, convincingly, and entertainingly, but also goes much further: it inspires." --Frederic Green, SIGACT News Book Review Column

Beautiful encyclopedic book
By Josep Diaz
This is a beautiful encyclopedic book, which covers a large range of topics from Theoretical Computer Science. The style favors intuition and clarity over technical details. Chapters 4 to 8 can be used as a textbook for an undergraduate complexity course. For computer science and mathematics students the book has the great advantage of examples from the physics world... the more advanced material can be easily used for graduate courses or seminars. For example, Chapters 12, 13 and 14 by themselves could be a perfect basic text for an advanced course in probabilistic methods in computer science and discrete mathematics. I hope future readers enjoy the book as much as I did.

Best theory of computation book ever!
By M. Villagra
There are fantastic books all over theoretical computer science on the same subjects. But this one, I find it simply the best of all of them. Why? Because it explains what really computer science is about, which is computation as the object of study, and it does so in such a friendly manner and accessible to mathematicians, physicists and (of course) computer scientists of all levels. In the preface of the book explicitly says so, the objective of this book is to show why computational complexity is such a beautiful field with beautiful mathematics, without going too much deeper into the technicalities. Even though they omit the gruesome details, I felt that the understanding gained from reading the book was enough to look at the references and go directly to the papers. Thus, at the same time, this book presents a full review of all computational complexity theory. Also, the problems at the end of each chapter are very fun, and they make the reader gain a deeper understanding of the chapter and other subjects that were not covered. The notes section after each problem set are full of anecdotes and historical remarks that makes the reading experience even more wonderful.

Headmelting
By Dan MacKinlay
This book starts with high-school mathematics and takes you all the way through the amazing architecture of mathematical problems themselves. It's encyclopaedia-length, but light and readable in style all the way through, sprinkled with liberal references to Lewis Carroll, Douglas Hofstadter and various other cult favourites of the literate mathnerd. That is, this exemplifies everything good about mathematical texts. Amazing.

For background, I am a mathematics major, but I had almost no exposure to computational complexity theory before starting this book apart from, say, the awareness that matrix inversion is approximately O(n^3)

Compromised Data: From Social Media to Big Data, by Axel Bruns

There has been a data rush in the past decade brought about by online communication and, in particular, social media (Facebook, Twitter, Youtube, among others), which promises a new age of digital enlightenment. But social data is compromised: it is being seized by specific economic interests, it leads to a fundamental shift in the relationship between research and the public good, and it fosters new forms of control and surveillance.

Compromised Data: From Social Media to Big Data explores how we perform critical research within a compromised social data framework. The expert, international lineup of contributors explores the limits and challenges of social data research in order to invent and develop new modes of doing public research. At its core, this collection argues that we are witnessing a fundamental reshaping of the social through social data mining.

Review

“Big data promise a more efficient understanding of citizen needs, wants, and desires and cast a wide net of harnessing these tendencies in the hope of bringing about more direct forms of democracy. At the same time, however, they do so at the cost of compromising personal data, in effect sacrificing the personal for the political. Compromised Data features contributions from leading scholars who examine the immediacy and complexity of data, big or small, and is a must read for all interested in these issues.” ―Zizi Papacharissi, Professor and Head of Communication, University of Illinois at Chicago, USA, and editor of the Journal of Broadcasting and Electronic Media and Social Media and Society

“Social theorists and champions of civil rights have long been concerned with the politics and practices of dataveillance, forms of surveillance accomplished through computation instead of by visual inspection. Yet, Compromised Data may be the first book that is so very clear about the threats and dangers of surveillance after the computational turn; after when, that is, the concern is not so much who sees whom, but whose data is captured by whom and what calculations are performed on that data. You have been instrumented -- through all your Internet-enabled devices -- to divulge where you are and when, what you say and write, with whom you associate, and what you are interested in. This book asks in very specific terms how we are compromised by big data.” ―Warren Sack, Professor of Film & Digital Media, University of California, Santa Cruz, USA

“[CC] The digital age provides society with many advantages in the areas of communication and information on a personal, social, or political level. Here, more then ten international scholars who have examined the importance and complexity of social data and big data issues address the dangers that may occur in surveillance of online sites, including how and by whom this social data may be transformed and eventually controlled. Under the best scenario, data collection and analysis help society further the common good. However, the results of social data analysis can often be compromised. Avenues such as Facebook andTwitter allow users to share personal information, but often these sites are compromised by marketers who may use this information for profit. Clicking on a link frequently gives researchers worthwhile information, but even an innocuous click can be problematic. In addition, privacy is a major issue. Individuals innocently list information about their age, where they work and live, what their interests and concerns are, where they travel, etc., not realizing the potential adverse effects of their actions. Selected information from data collected online can lead to issues related to social profiling and guilt or innocence, as well as flag persons of interest. Overall, a thought-provoking book for all online users. Summing Up: Recommended. All readership levels.” -D. J. Gougeon, University of Scranton, USA, CHOICE
