British-born artist David Hockney has lived in L.A. since the 1970s. His luxuriant drawings of California, with their Mediterranean-like idyll of blue skies, palm trees and swimming pools, speak of alienation and spiritual emptiness. In this catalogue of a retrospective at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Hockney's diverse crayon, charcoal-and-ink drawings and watercolors include ruthlessly honest self-portraits, serene still lifes, nudes, street scenes, penetrating portraits and startlingly original vistas based on his travels in Egypt, Morocco, Paris and Hollywood. Also included are experimental works such as computer drawings, fax-machine images and Polaroid collages that combine photography with pencil sketches. In their accompanying essay to a rich, constantly new body of work, Luckhardt, a curator at the Hamburger Lunsthalle, and Melia, a British art historian, explore how drawing informs Hockney's approach to every medium, including painting and stage-set design.

No living artist is better known than David Hockney. His paintings of well-heeled people (his friends and collectors) in large, sparely furnished rooms filled with pastel light and of swimming pools outside those rooms are icons of Southern California that have influenced everything from display advertising to MTV. He is the best stage designer for opera in ages, and his male nudes are admired by more than just his fellow gay men. This survey's 165 drawings, dating from Hockney's British art school days to 1994, collectively show one reason for his long-lived success: he samples from throughout the history of art, stylistically (recently, from synthetic cubism) and technically (e.g., using van Gogh's tool, the reed pen, to draw as he did); this borrowing makes Hockney's work rich in cultural suggestion yet never overpowers his own artistic personality. The essays by Luckhardt and Melia help with appreciating Hockney's uses of older art but don't bog down in technical talk. A most rewarding art book, though some early colorplates are inexplicably out of numerical order. Ray Olson

A beautiful book

Hockney is a master draftsman, as his work here proves: his drawings using colored pencil are particularly impressive. Reproductions are good (notice the yellow under-drawing on the cover) and the retrospective covers his work from 1954 (when he was 17) up until around 1994.
Anyone involved in the practice of drawing will be inspired by both his prodigious output and his skill. On opening this book, his originality and humor become apparent. There is a more provocative range of subject matter contained here than I would have expected, but nothing outside the normal range of human behavior.

I only wish I could have attended this exhibition and seen these works in person.

A favorite book for browsing. A comprehensive collection of drawings in a size that are easy to view. Nice amount of early drawings that are my personal favorites in Hockneys portfolio.

An absolute must for everybody that has patients with LBP!

For the first time in the (para)medical science-history of Low Back Pain, a book is written that is based on scientific evidence. The list of References includes no less then 47 articles, scientific papers and books. And more important even than that: McKenzie opens up a total new chapter on the causes of the so-called (until now!) 'non-specific' LBP, which to the reader is not at all 'non-specific' anymore once you've read (and maybe re-read) this book! "The Lumbar Spine" taught me things I never learned in college (PT and MT) and that are still not taught in general, unfortunately: specific disc behaviour: the mechanical principles that damage the disc and make it to heal (or to not heal!), and how these principles cause LBP, even long before discs are herniated. One superb evidence-based book, especially since it describes a low-cost therapy! And: this book explains why manipulative therapy (MT) often does not give the results we had hoped for. All physiotherapists, chiropracters, osteopaths, general practitioners and neuro- and orthopedic surgeons: this book will almost certain be the basis for the future treatment of 'non-specific' LBP. If there's one book you want to have read, this is it!

Gold standard for conservative spinal care

This is an excellent reference textbook and guide to mechanical treatment for mechanical spinal dysfunctions for health care professionals. The mechanical diagnosis into the proper syndromes and application of mechanical treatments needs to be provided by a highly trained practitioner (preferrably a Certified MDT)that has attended the McKenzie courses. The proper applicatin of the manual techniques cannot be learned by simply reading the text.
"Treat Your Own Back" and "Treat Your Own Neck" books are excellent for the layperson.

Not for the layperson, but the best back theory out there

After spending several years working in Physical Therapy and after having taken a Mackenzie course and used his techniques on well over a hundred patients I can say that his technique works. I have seen patients that were literally a few days away from very involved back surgery come in for one last attempt at PT and leave out pain free and not having to go to surgery. Does it work with every patient??? No. But no technique does. Give yourself a chance and see a Mackenzie certified back specialist before you go under the knife. You'll thank yourself.

VERY down to earth and useful!

I loved this book! It's really down to earth, easy to ready and easy to convert to action in my own business. It's a book that someone who is a budding business owner would find extremely valuable as well as a seasoned business owner. Our world is changing so rapidly and the concepts/matrix of this book provides any business owner with tools to support growth and profitability in all the changes we have now and are sure to have in the future. In every aspect the book teaches us about Partnership in all its forms. Effective partnership is the essence of success for the future of any business in our rapidly changing world.

A gem! I highly reccomend that you read this book.

Overall, I found the book to be a very accurate portrayal of the
experiences that I have had in building my own company. Having
worked closely with Michael Walsh & Kaizen Consulting, I found
it interesting to see the concepts we have been working with for
several years presented in this book. While no single text can be a
complete resource, I am incredibly impressed with this collection of
business practices. A reader can expect to achieve piercing insight
into his own operation while reading about Sponge UK ... and new
insights each time the book is read. I feel inspired to apply what I
learned to my own operation immediately.”

All the love letters from the "Sex and the City" movie and more!

I have seen the "Sex and the City" movie several times. This book has all the love letters that Carrie and Big read each other in the movie. It looks to me like the book that Carrie reads in bed. Maybe the book was just inspired by the movie, which came out the same day. Either way, this book is very beautiful and romantic.

I especially enjoyed learning the details of each writer's life. It's amazing how passionate some of our greatest leaders really were. I also love the illustrations, which make me feel like I'm going back in time.

My favorite letter was from John Keats, who (I learned from reading the book) died from consumption at the tender age of 26. While separated from his true love in his dying days, he wrote:

"You could not step or move an eyelid but it would shoot to my heart--I am greedy of you--Do not think of any thing but me. Do not live as if I was not existing--Do not forget me--But have I any right to say you forget me? Perhaps you think of me all day.

"Have I any right to wish you to be unhappy for me? You would forgive me for wishing it, if you knew the extreme passion I have that you should love me--and for you to love me as I do you, you must think of no one but me, much less write that sentence. Yesterday and this morning I have been haunted with a sweet vision--

"I have seen you the whole time in your shepherdess dress. How my senses have ached at it! How my heart has been devoted to it! How my eyes have been full of tears at it! Indeed I think a real Love is enough to occupy the widest heart--Your going to town alone, when I heard of it was a shock to me--yet I expected it--promise me you will not for some time, till I get better. Promise me this and fill the paper full of the most endearing names."

Less letters, poorly put together and full of errors. Buy a different edition!

I have so far had 3 different editions of Love Letters of Great Men, this being the second and possibly the worst. It appears to be the most popular which is why I bought it but I can't understand why so many people would put up with something which is obviously rushed and clumsily put together. Just look at the contents for a start - why are some names only listed with a surname - Shelley, Goethe, Kafka etc and others have their full names - George Bernard Shaw? The Index is even worse with some authors listed by their first name! And why don't the contents match up with what is actually in the book?! And the spelling, don't even get me started - it's Edgar Allan Poe not Edgar Allen Poe! It's shambolic. Didn't anyone even do a basic proofread before sending it to the printers? And what's with the Vincent van Gogh letter being in there? The only existing letter was written to his brother after he had just been rejected by his cousin. This is the entire thing:
Life has become very dear to me, and I am very glad that I love. My life and my love are one. "But you are faced with a `no, never never'" is your reply. My answer to that is, "Old boy, for the present I look upon that `no, never never' as a block of ice which I press to my heart to thaw."
This is not a love letter! If it is then also in this book should be all of the magnificent letters which great men have written to their friends, friends of their loved ones, the family of their loved ones, their own family members, future mothers and fathers-in-law, letters asking for permission to marry their love, letters expressing their love not to the person they actually love but to other people! And Lewis Carroll? Ewww all of those letters were written to children! The rest of the letters are the same from book to book but this one has even less so there is nothing special about this book than any of the other editions. In fact the other editions are better. If like me you would rather get something well made than done in a rush choose one of the others! I have reviewed 3 now, the first one I received as a present was edited by Ursula Doyle, it appears to be the most popular one in the UK. The most recent I bought is a more recent edition and has a lot more letters and information in it. There is no editor given but it is published by English Rose Publishing. It has a lot of letters which aren't in other editions and has over twice as many letters in, is better edited, put together and has obviously had a lot more effort put into it whereas this and the Doyle one seem really rushed and clumsy. I suppose both these resulted from the Sex and the City film so that's why they were rushed, actually looking at the publication dates now they both came out within a month of the film. The publishers must have raked it in!

I commend this volume to a careful reading. It is replete with strong dos and uncompromising don'ts ... As a handbook for those who are attempting to bring their museums into the twenty-first century, it is a splendidly complete guide.

A solid read!

Handbook for Museums is an excellent source for both the inexperienced and the veteran. The book covers a wide range of topics, from artifact conservation to ethics. I found the information contained to be of great help to my budding museum career.
The book is written simply and concepts are easily grasped. As a bonus, each chapter includes a 'Questions from the Field' section, in which FAQs about subjects relating to the chapter are answered. In short, Edson and Dean stick to facts and keep it simple.
Due to large field of subjects covered, do not expect a technical dissertation in each chapter. This may not bode well with some people, however I feel the information contained applies to all skill levels and positions in the museum field.
'Handbook for Museums' is an excellent read; it's great for both classroom study or working reference. Definitely a 'Thumbs Up'!

Introduction to Experimental Methods

As many previous reviewers have already pointed out, this book is not nearly as good an introduction to theoretical high energy physics as Griffiths' "Introduction to Elementary Particles". The primary reason for this is that Perkins' book was never meant to be read as a theoretical course in the first place. This is why Griffiths introduces Feynman rules and gamma matrices near the middle of the book and uses them extensively throughout the rest; Perkins mentions them in passing in the first chapter and then completely forgets them. In Perkins you will find little rigorous math, but a lot of experimental physics. If you want to understand the theory behind T violation, use Griffiths. If you want to know how physicists measured the electric dipole momentum of the neutron ( thus putting an upper limit on the magnitude of T violation ), Perkins will explain it in detail, together with the schematics of the apparatus they used.
Overall, this book does not fit its title well - it is not a good introduction to high energy physics ( unless you are so totally averse to math that you can't manage Griffiths or Peskin/Shroeder ). However, it has its own purpose - that is, to teach experimental methods in high energy physics. It probably should be studied after Griffiths by those who are interested in experimental side of particle physics.

Not horrible for what it is, but you can do better

Basically, If you want theoretical approach stop reading this and buy griffiths' book, it's a lot better.

I'm using Perkins for a course mainly made up of senior undergraduates. First of all, a lot of the other reviewers have ripped the book to shreds, and most of their complaints are valid. I'd like to point out that this book actually attempts a fairly difficult task of introducing relatively advanced concepts which require qft, to students without any background in field theory.

The long and the short of it is... Perkins' book is geared for learning with a phenomonological, experimental approach. This results in a lot of hand waving, and not many mathematical or theoretical insights. If you're expecting these things, the book will be dissapointing.

All of this aside, there are some major flaws in the book. First of all, it kind of lacks on organization. There are a lot of charts, tables and graphs thrown about at random, and with little reasoning or thought. This makes Perkins' fairly useless as a reference, since you might have to look at four or more different charts to find out the relevant properties of a given particle.

My other major complaint, is that Perkins uses a lot of jargon without sufficiently introducing the terminology. While, this is fine for people who already know particle physics, I'm guessing that if you're reading this book, you don't already know particle physics.

Finally, despite being a fourth addition, there are still a bunch of misprints/omissions. For example, there's a question (which i conveniently had for a homework assignment) totally based on a concept not mentioned anywhere within the book. Google searches on the topic led only to obscure and inaccessible papers.

Basically, if you have to use this book for a course be prepared to read and re-read each section of it, and to suppliment with other books. I'd suggest buying griffiths along with it, event if you're not into the whole theory thing.

A absolutely horrible introduction to High Energy Physics

I used Perkin's book for a one sememester 500 level graduate course. I honestly believe that of the 20+ books that I have used in undergrad and grad school, that this is the absolute worst text I have encountered. The equations in the text are mearly thrown in without the slightest justification or hint of the possible method of derivation. If you would truly understand the significance of the equations, then you would need a background knowledge that I can hardly believe anybody looking for an introduction to high energy physics could have. However, this is far from its biggest pitfall. The book is choppy to read. There are almost no quantitative examples and yet the questions are mostly quantitative. I am sure that I could think of more specifics dislikes, but I think that the reader has seen my opion. To anybody considering buying this text I suggest instead purchasing griffiths "introduction to elementary particles." My class was so displeased with perkins text that our professor has promised to switch to griffiths next year. To reiterate.... Perkins book is the epitome of bad writing. I give my apologies to the author, but I don't want others to waste their time and money on this text. Buy Griffiths Book, it is good!
